Beyond Textbooks
$32 Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement. |

History in the Making
$17.95 In this “thought-provoking study” (Library Journal ), historian Kyle Ward—the widely acclaimed co-author of History Lessons—gives us another fascinating look at the biases inherent in the way we learn about our history. Juxtaposing passages from U.S. history textbooks from different eras, History in the Making provides us with intriguing new perspectives on familiar historical events and the ways in which they have been represented over time. The hardcover edition of History in the Making struck a chord among readers of popular history, and Ward was featured on NPR’s popular series “How the Understanding of U.S. History Changes.” “Interesting and useful,” according to Booklist, the book “convincingly illustrates how texts change as social and political attitudes evolve.”With excerpts that span two hundred years, from Columbus’s arrival to the Boston Massacre, from women’s suffrage to Japanese internment, History in the Making exposes the stark contrasts between the lessons different generations have been taught about our past. “A good starting point for anyone interested in history and subjectivity” (Kirkus), this immensely readable book is proof positive that your history is not your grandparent’s history and won’t be your children’s history. |

Interpreting History in Sino-Japanese Relations
$105 Sino-Japanese relations were beset by controversy in the 1980s when the Japanese Education Ministry tried to re-write school textbooks to downplay the atrocities committed by Japanese during World War II. This book examines the diplomatic storm created by the textbook issue, as well as the decision-making processes of the Chinese and Japanese governments, who were more concerned with changes in international and domestic politics than with adopting a correct view of history. |

The Rock History Reader
$29.95 Browse the course listings for most universities or colleges and chances are good that you will find a ''History of Rock'' class listed somewhere in their catalog. The study of rock music has become entrenched in higher learning. Yet as instructors encounter younger and younger students for whom rock's history is either a shadowy, distant phenomenon or, conversely, an entity that seems too familiar, the need for a book that illuminates rock's historical formation has become increasingly urgent. To be sure, there are numerous textbooks that supply a narrative of rock's general stylistic development. Still there exists no anthology of historically based readings that sufficiently brings to life the often contentious issues, arguments, conflicts and creative tensions that have defined rock's momentous rise and spread. The Rock History Reader seeks to fill that gap. The Rock History Reader is modeled after the types of annotated ''source reading'' collections that should be well familiar to any college classroom teacher in the Humanities. The Rock History Reader introduces students to rock as it has been received and explained as a social and musical practice during different historical eras. Arranged chronologically, this reader is perfect for the Introduction to Rock course, which usually proceeds from the roots of rock in the late '40s through today's latest trends. The editor has selected a variety of material--ranging from Chuck Berry's comments on the injustices of the music, Lester Bangs' influential style of rock criticism, Spiro Agnew's political speech on the dangers of drugs and rock music, Dick Hebdige's scholarly analysis of punk rock, or songwriter/performer Janis Ian's nuanced consideration of the ramifications of online music sharing--which are designed to encourage reflection and discussion in the classroom. Either as a primary textbook or as a supplement to a narrative history, The Rock History Reader promises to set a new standard for introductory cou |

American History Revised
$16.99 “American History Revised is as informative as it is entertaining and humorous. Filled with irony, surprises, and long-hidden secrets, the book does more than revise American history, it reinvents it.” —James Bamford, bestselling author of The Puzzle Palace, Body of Secrets, and The Shadow Factory     This spirited reexamination of American history delves into our past to expose hundreds ofstartling facts that never made it into the textbooks, and highlights how little-known peopleand events played surprisingly influential roles in the great American story.    We tend to think of history as settled, set in stone, but American History Revised reveals a past that is filled with ironies, surprises, and misconceptions. Living abroad for twelve years gave author Seymour Morris Jr. the opportunity to view his country as an outsider and compelled him to examine American history from a fresh perspective. As Morris colorfully illustrates through the 200 historical vignettes that make up this book, much of our nation’s past is quite different—and far more remarkable—than we thought.       We discover that:   • In the 1950s Ford was approached by two Japanese companies begging for a joint venture. Ford declined their offers, calling them makers of “tin cars.” The two companies were Toyota and Nissan. • Eleanor Roosevelt and most women’s groups opposed the Equal Rights Amendment forbidding gender discrimination. • The two generals who ended the Civil War weren’t Grant and Lee. • The #1 bestselling American book of all time was written in one day. • The Dutch made a bad investment buying Manhattan for $24. • Two young girls aimed someday to become First Lady—and succeeded. • Three times, a private financier saved the United States from bankruptcy.      |
