Beyond Textbooks
$32 Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement. |

Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks
$49.95 Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes. |

Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences
$66.99 What do Florence Nightingale, a failed Antarctic expedition, the Guinness Ale Company, and the Challenger space shuttle disaster have in common? Discover the answer in this new statistics textbook for the behavioral sciences. In Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, Susan Nolan and Tom Heinzen convincingly convey the social power and the personal benefits of statistical reasoning while faithfully teaching its underlying mathematical principles. Chapter-specific narratives let students encode and retain their learning through vivid associative memory hooks that all carry the same message: Statistics has a success story to tell. Embedding that story within each chapter makes learning statistics easier by making it more meaningful. The resulting text conforms to the traditional structure and elements of a statistics textbook, but it shifts the paradigm for teaching behavioral statistics from apology (for being so difficult) to opportunity (to create a meaningful career). You, and your students, will rave about a statistics textbook! Welcome to Nolan and Heinzen’s Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences! |

The Practice of Statistics in the Life Sciences
$63.99 Over the past two decades, David Moore’s texts helped drive the evolution of statistics education from a focus on computation and formulas to an emphasis on how data are actually collected, analyzed, and interpreted by professionals in real-world settings. Now Brigitte Baldi and David Moore have produced a version of Moore’s bestselling brief introductory text, The Basic Practice of Statistics for students in the life sciences... With its focus on life science data sets, examples, and exercises, The Practice of Statistics in the Life Sciences (PSLS) features the writing style and helpful pedagogy that have helped hundreds of thousands of students see the meaning and relevance of real-world statistics in action. Life science, nursing and allied health students with limited mathematical backgrounds will be able to utilize the same fundamental tools, techniques, and interpretive skills working statisticians rely on everyday. Examples and exercises are drawn from diverse areas of biology such as physiology, brain and behavior, health and medicine, nutrition, ecology, and microbiology. |

An underlying theme of this volume is that Husserl is constantly returning to origins, revising his thought in the light of new knowledge offered by the sciences. |

Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences
$93.49 Bestselling statistics author, Fredrick J. Gravetter, and co-author Lori-Ann B. Forzano have written a text for research methods that helps students see how interesting and exciting experimental and non-experimental research can be. Inviting and conversational, RESEARCH METHODS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, Fourth Edition, leads students through the research process from start to finish. The text opens with tips and strategies for generating research ideas, moves to selecting measures and participants, and then offers an examination of research strategy and design. This step-by-step approach emphasizes the decisions researchers must make at each stage of the process. The authors avoid a "cookbook" approach to the facts by linking terminology with applied concepts; their "lecture in a book" style makes the text accessible to students by emphasizing discussion and explanation of topics. Each chapter ends with a set of student exercises and activities. Examples and content throughout the book reflect the most current APA guidelines. |
