How does my university know what i’m downloading?

I know that some people at universities get busted for illegal downloading because they download files while in the university’s network. How do they pin point who it is? and how do they know if its illegal? For example, I had my father buy me an e-textbook and he is going to send it to me. It a big file so he’s sending it through filemail.com. When I go to download it from filemail.com how will I know I won’t get in trouble by the university? Can files sent via email be tracked by the university?
