Education Textbooks
To get free copies of textbooks you have a few options. This article will cover these options and how safe they are. You have to consider the pirated copies could land you in serious trouble.
Since the inception of the Internet college students have been clamoring for free copies of textbooks. The only problem with this is that the textbook companies want to continue to make millions and millions of dollars off students.
Some ideas have been to make free copies of textbooks available with sponsored ad’s in them. To me that is a problem. Who wants to be reading homework for school and have ad’s popping up in your face all the time. But you can download free copies of textbooks from many different sources on the Internet.
These books will most likely be an outdated version of the textbook you want but you can still probably get by using them for class. A second issue with the downloaded textbooks is that you will have to either download them to a laptop so that you can carry it with you or print out a copy of the download. With most textbooks being over 100 pages that could get expensive with ink and paper.
What you really need to worry about when getting free copies of textbooks is they could be a pirated version. The new laws in place are really cracking down on this type of behavior. You surely don’t want to get slapped with a fine that will cost more than actually buying a used version of the textbooks you need.
My idea on getting textbooks of the Internet is this. If the textbook companies would allow us to download the textbook, we could compromise by letting them run ad’s. But the only time they ad would pop up is when you open the textbook or when you close it. It is pretty simple but they are always thinking about how much money they can get college students to spend. I believe information and learning should be free.
You have learned that the textbook companies will probably never allow downloaded textbooks. Plus you have learned that getting free copies of textbooks can get you in some serious trouble. Just remember to do the time if you do the crime.

Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks
$49.95 Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes. |

Designing History in East Asian Textbooks
$140 This book analyses the efforts throughout East Asia to deploy education for purposes of political socialization, and in particular in order to shape notions of identity. Written by a group of international education experts chapters discuss the enduring focus on the role of curricula in inculcating homogenous visions of the national self, and indeed homogenized visions of significant 'others'. The book also looks at the alternative approaches to textbook design, including the new trend of common textbook initiatives which operate with the aim of defusing the tensions that mutual representation have tended to fuel. It also breaks new ground in the alaysis of East Asia's textbook wars by including contributions from scholars and curriculum developers involved in writing national and multi-national history textbooks. |

Fundamentals of Statistical Reasoning in Education, 2nd Edition
$80.5 The original introductory statistics textbook written specifically for the discipline of education. Typically, education professors had to select from textbooks that were directed at "the behavioral sciences" or, at best, "psychology and education." While many of these texts are technically and conceptually adequate, the examples, problems, and applications are of little relevance to the reality of schools and, therefore, to the interests and concerns of education students. This text was designed to fill the void. Includes a CD. |

Beyond Textbooks
$32 Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement. |

Advances in Language and Education
$150 This book examines new functional approaches to language and education, and the impact of these on literacy in the classroom. The first section looks at issues of multimodality, in which the definition of a text is expanded to include not only that which is written down, but also the interaction of writing, graphics, and audiovisual material. The contributors explores ways in which language education can be expanded to deal with multimodal discourse, whether in children’s books, in textbooks, or on the web. The second section looks at how critical discourse analysis and appraisal theory can be used as tools for assessing the effectiveness of student writing and literacy achievement, and also for helping developing writers to write more successfully. The final section argues that corpus-based studies of language have changed the way we see language, and that the way we teach language should evolve in line with these changes. This appealing survey of new directions in language and education includes contributions from internationally renowned scholars. It will be of interest to researchers in systemic functional linguistics, or language and education. |

Early Childhood Education and Care
$47 'A much needed book that uniquely brings together policy and practice in early childhood education and care across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. It offers a wealth of information and useful websites and addresses so that, importantly, readers can keep abreast of the rapidly changing external environment in these countries.. An essential read for those wishing to understand the background to policy and practice in early childhood education and care' - Linda Miller, The Open University. 'This book is long overdue; it provides effective cameos of developments in each country, highlighting key legislation, the underlying philosophy, the formation of policies and thier implementation in state, voluntary and private provision' - The International Journal of Early Childhood. 'This unique resource will be invaluable in helping students and others trying to understand the context of current early years provision. The case studies bring the book to life and ground it in the stories of real children and their families. They highlight how the similarities and differences in support for children and their families are more dependent on where they live than what they need' - Lesley Staggs. Early childhood education and care policy has an impact on the daily lives of early years practitioners and the families and children they work with, and practising and trainee early childhood professionals need to have an understanding of current policy as well as the contexts for policy-making and implementation. Currently, the majority of textbooks for early years education and early childhood students in the UK focus on the situation in England. As a result, readers may have a skewed perspective on policy and practice, and not be aware of the varying and different contexts in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Also, those working in settings not in England have to work hard to apply texts to their own contexts. In contrast, this book gives the reader easy access to information on the policies and practices in ECEC across each of the countries in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Each chapter covers: o background information. o policy and practice in early childhood education and care. o transition. o schooling and curriculum. o quality assurance, examination and inspection. o professional development and training. o future and imminent changes. o case studies of children's lives. In addition to describing the legislatory, political and practical situation in each country, the book enables comparisons to be drawn, and helps readers interpret the data critically. It will be essential reading for modules on comparative education and international perspectives, but will also form a foundation for all modules involving policy and provision on Early Years Education, Early Childhood or Childhood Studies courses. Practitioners undertaking CPD modules or foundation degrees, and international students looking for comparative |

Resource Allocation and Productivity in Education
$130 Resource allocation decisions made by school boards, principals, and teachers are critical for they determine the adequacy and equity of resources actually made available for specific schools, educational programs and individual students. The most important resources are often concealed by aggregate state or district measures such as dollars per student. For these decisions, the most important resources are elements such as basic and supplemental staffing levels, staff time, funding amounts for textbooks and supplies, selection of new equipment (particularly technology), and support for new or renovated facilities. The authors review current practices at each important decision-making level in school districts, from the school board to the classroom. At each juncture, the findings are interpreted to reveal both the causes of the practices and their implications for improving school effectiveness. This book provides new research in helping to inform and improve resource allocation practices in schools. The general conclusion is that improvement in the resource allocation practices in education requires a shift in focus to results instead of inputs, a strong emphasis on student learning as the primary focus of decisions, and systematic evaluation of results. |

Exploring Your Role in Early Childhood Education, Fourth Edition
$55.99 The fourth edition of Exploring Your Role in Early Childhood Education is written for college students who are relatively new to formal study of the field of early childhood education. Typically, these students are enrolled in specialized programs at 2- or 4-year colleges or universities that prepare them to work with children ages birth through 8. This comprehensive introduction to the field is most appropriate as the primary textbook for the initial course. Itwill meet the needs of instructors who teach in baccalaureate (4- or 5-year programs) as well as the needs of instructors who teach in online colleges or 2-year associate degree programs at community colleges. <P>Traditionally, introductory textbooks in early childhood education have been organized by curriculum. The typical introductory text begins with a history of the field and a chapter on developmental theory followed by one chapter on each major subject area–language, mathematics, science, the arts, and so forth. <ITAL>Exploring Your Role</ITAL> in Early Childhood Education takes a more integrated and innovative approach. This text is organized around the essential roles and responsibilities that effective early childhood educators must fulfill. Another fundamental difference between <ITAL>Exploring Your Role in Early Childhood Education</ITAL> and other introductory textbooks is that it is interactive. This means that readers are encouraged to respond to what they are reading while they are reading it. We rely upon case material and verbatim comments from students to make the content come alive. As you look through the book, you will notice sections called “Pause and Reflect About¼” in the margin notes. This material will encourage you to relate what you have read to your own experiences and guide you to reflect more deeply on important topics. </P> |

Preserving Cultural Identity through Education
$19.4 Immigrants from China started settling in Calcutta, the British capital of colonial India, from the late eighteenth century. Initially, the immigrant community comprised of male workers, many of whom sojourned between China and India. Only in the early twentieth century was there a large influx of women and children from China. To address the educational needs of the children - both immigrant and locally-born - several Chinese-medium primary and middle schools were established in Calcutta by the community in the 1920s and 1930s. Using many hitherto unexplored textual sources and interviews in India, China, and Canada, this detailed and unprecedented study examines the history and significance of these Chinese-medium schools. It focuses on the role they played in preserving Chinese cultural identity not only through the use of educational curricula and textbooks imported from China, but also with the emphasis on the need to return to the ancestral homeland for higher education. This study also breaks new ground by examining the impact of political and other factionalism within the community as well as the India-China conflict of 1962 that resulted in the closure of most of the Chinese-medium schools in Calcutta by the 1980s. |

Education and Gendered Citizenship in Pakistan by Naseem, M. Ayaz Edition , 0
$48.99 Education and Gendered Citizenship in Pakistan challenges the uncritical use of the long held dictum of the development discourse that education empowers women. Situated in the post-structuralist feminist position, it argues that in its current state the educational discourse in Pakistan actually disempowers women. Through a systematic examination of the educational discourse in Pakistan, Naseem argues that the educational discourse (through curricula, textbooks, and pedagogical practices) constitutes gendered identities and positions them in a way that exacerbates and intensifies inequalities between men and women on one hand and between the dominant and minority groups on the other. Gendered constitution and positioning of subjects also regulates the relationship between the subjects and the state in a way that women and minorities are excluded from the development and citizenship realms. Finally, Naseem uncovers the mechanisms through which the educational discourse in Pakistan constitutes a militant nationalism and militaristic nationalistic subjects. |

An Education
$5.49 When the journalist Lynn Barber was 16, she was picked up at a bus-stop by an attractive older man who drew up in his sports car - and her life was almost wrecked. A bright confident girl, on course to go to Oxford, she began a relationship which, incredibly, was encouraged by her conventional, suburban parents and which took her into the louche, semi-criminal world of west London just as the 1960s began. Ruin beckoned, until one day she made an important discovery. 'An Education', the opening piece of this fascinating memoir, was highly praised when first published in Granta magazine, and is currently being filmed by the BBC with a Nick Hornby script. |

Exploring Your Role in Early Childhood Education by Jalongo, Mary R.; Isenberg, Joan Edition , 4
$63.99 Traditionally, introductory textbooks in early childhood education have been organized by curriculum. The typical introductory text begins with a history of the field and a chapter on developmental theory followed by one chapter on each major subject area–language, mathematics, science, the arts, and so forth. Exploring Your Role in Early Childhood Education takes an integrated approach and is organized around the essential roles and responsibilities that effective early childhood educators must fulfill. In addition to its organization, the interactive nature of the text sets it apart. Readers are encouraged to respond to what they are reading while they are reading it. Case material and verbatim comments from students make the content come alive and Pause and Reflect About sections in the margin notes help students relate the content to their own experiences. Exploring Your Role in Early Childhood Education is written for college students who are relatively new to formal study of the field of early childhood education and is appropriate for courses at both 2- and 4-year programs. |

American Education
$71.99 With a focus on the future of American education--and the goals and nature of teaching in a global economy--this forward-thinking text provides you with a comprehensive overview of the foundations of modern American schooling. The book's premise is that education in the 21st century must facilitate more complex, deeper, and more varied learning that will enable all citizens to survive and thrive in an ever-changing world. In presenting traditional topics and important educational issues--including diversity and equity, the accountability movement, effective schools, instructional best practices, and alternatives to public schools--the authors cultivate the very skills and knowledge base that they believe are critical for success in a "flat" world. With the overarching goal of furthering higher-order thinking, they model the principles of evidence-based practice and the critical-thinking process by examining issues and controversies in depth and presenting supporting research to validate their conclusions. Activities support the critical-thinking focus and promote your self-understanding, challenging you to weigh "common knowledge" against real evidence and form your own conclusions. Written in an appealing, conversational style, and using examples that immediately resonate with prospective student teachers, this thought-provoking new text provides a timely and insightful perspective of American education. |

Pharmacy Education
$29.95 Pharmacy Education: What Matters in Learning and Teaching is an essential resource for any pharmacy faculty member. More than a narration of the philosophical aspects of teaching and personal perspectives on life as a faculty member, it explores ‘what matters”, “why it matters”, and “how to apply” the matter to teaching, learning, and assessment in pharmacy education. It covers a variety of teaching settings (e.g., large classroom, small group teaching, clinical site) and guides the reader in developing a deeper understanding of what it means to be a teacher. Scenarios are included in each chapter, offering readers the opportunity to readily apply educational theory to their role as educators and to adapt the book’s content to their specific educational setting. The reader, whether a part-time faculty member, full-time faculty member, or adjunct professor/preceptor, is given the opportunity to personalize the material addressed in the text to his/her stage of development through engagement in reflective workbook exercises. Pharmacy Education: What Matters in Learning and Teaching is a valuable tool for mid-level senior-level faculty members as well as for new faculty. This text can also serve as a resource for adjunct faculty members and pharmacy residency directors and preceptors to aid in the development and refinement of clinical educational programs in pharmacy. This book will be a valuable tool for not only individual pharmacy educators but for schools of pharmacy and pharmacy residency programs in their provision of faculty development and preceptor development programs. |
