Foreign Languages Textbooks
Learn a New Language: Mistakes to Avoid
Learning a new language can be a challenging, fun and rewarding experience all at the same time. Not only will it give you a chance to gain further insight into a different culture, but it will also be a valuable tool in expanding your horizons as you travel, study or even work abroad. If you want to be able to learn a new language effectively and in the correct manner, then here are just some of the common mistakes that you should avoid.
Many people have the misconception that in order to learn a foreign language, one must learn through the traditional way of education that most of us are accustomed to, through textbooks. And because of this belief, many people make the mistake of overwhelming themselves too much by memorizing grammatical rules and tenses. It’s not that this method is completely wrong, it’s just that learning a new language requires more experience than study. And learning by a mere textbook curriculum will surely bore you or frustrate you or may be even push you to quit early on in the game.
Another common mistake that people make in learning a new language is being solely dependent on their teacher’s skills. Employing the services of a foreign language tutor can make the task a bit easier by facilitating your study and pointing out the things that you need to work on but in reality, they can only do so much in terms of teaching you everything you need to learn in a foreign language. It’s likely that they will also commit their own mistakes or grammar faux pas, as there is no one in this world who can speak a language perfectly. Tutors are a great way for you to be able to practice the language you are learning, and that’s all they’re really intended to be.
If you want to learn a new language, then you must have the heart for it. Choose one that you can be passionate about and one that can fuel the interest in you for a very long time as real progress from a foreign language will only be noticed after a few months of regular study. You should have the right attitude as you take on this challenge. Remember that Rome wasn’t built on a day so don’t get easily exasperated if you feel that you’re not learning as fast as you would have liked to. It’s also quite natural to make mistakes so don’t be afraid of it. Look at it as way that will help you master the language because the more mistakes, the more chances for improvement.
It’s actually easy to fall into the trap of these common mistakes that are mentioned in this article so if you have already fallen into one, don’t fret. You can always pick yourself up, brush it off and reassess your learning style. As with other major feats that we all encounter in our lives, as long as you have faith in your own capacities and talents, success will naturally just follow.

On Teaching Foreign Languages
$144 The author reports on a qualitative, action-research project on theories and practices in foreign language education. The goal of the study was to relate the knowledge of foreign language teaching, learning, and acquisition gained through research to the beliefs and experiences of expert foreign language teachers. The four participating teachers represent real teachers who distinguish themselves from their peers for their excellence in teaching foreign languages and their success in serving as clinical teachers. Four theoretical issues are discussed in detail: the proficiency movement; the role of input; teaching language in context; and class participation, motivation, and discipline. These aspects were selected because (1) they pose major challenges to foreign language interns and (2) they play an essential role in the learning-acquisition process of second language students. The major contribution of this study is the integration of the theoretical and practical dimensions. The practical aspect is presented by the expert foreign language teachers who describe in their own words how and explain why they implement a given foreign language theory in their classrooms. This integration provides foreign language teachers with a realistic view of foreign language education and establishes a dialogue between the university and the school communities. A significant number of excerpts from discussion-interview sessions conducted with the teachers are included. |

Modern Languages in the Primary School
$46 How can foreign language learning be developed in primary schools? In what ways can it be integrated into the primary classroom? Modern Languages in the Primary School tackles these questions, challenging current perceptions of primary modern languages, arguing that modern languages should be fully integrated into the primary curriculum, and looking at ways in which this can be achieved. The authors examine ways in which language-learning can be made a rich experience for all. They offer ideas on how to start language programmes in schools, or enhance those already in place. The book: - Features a 3-stage practical approach to teaching languages with different age groups in primary schools - Develops a coherent view of language learning and teaching - Refers to the KS2 Framework elements of oracy, literacy, intercultural understanding, knowledge about language and language learning strategies - Contains a chapter which offers a theoretical introduction to content and language integrated learning (CLIL) - Refers to the QTS Standards and offers a short guide to internet-based and multimedia resources. This book is for Primary ITE students and experienced teachers who are taking on the Modern Language coordinator role or teaching modern languages in primary schools for the first time. Philip Hood is Course Director of the National SCITT Primary PGCE and Lecturer in Modern Languages Education at the University of Nottingham. Kristina Tobutt is a Primary teacher and Associate Consultant for Nottinghamshire LA. |

Tense and Aspect in Romance Languages
$173 This volume presents a state-of-the-art descriptive and explanatory analysis of the second language development of Romance tense-aspect systems. It contains new experimental data from adult French, Catalan, Portuguese learners, and Italian children learners. Standing research questions are addressed and pedagogical implications for foreign language classrooms are proposed arguing that there are possible commonalities in the instructional sequences of tense-aspect development in Romance languages. The first chapter presents an overview of current theoretical approaches and a summary of empirical findings. The following four chapters introduce new empirical data from a variety of theoretical perspectives (e.g., the Aspect Hypothesis, the UG/Minimalist framework). Chapter 5 proposes practical pedagogical approaches for the foreign language classroom based on empirical findings. The last chapter summarizes and discusses these findings in order to start elaborating a more comprehensive model of the development of tense-aspect marking in the Romance languages. |

English Literature and Ancient Languages
$50 While the influence of Greek and Roman literature on British literature has been extensively surveyed, the role of those ancient languages themselves within modern British literature has only begun to be studied. This book is a study of the literary representation and dramatization of English in contact with Greek and Latin. - ;Literature in English is hardly ever entirely in English. Contact with other languages takes place, for example, whenever foreign languages are introduced, or if a native style is self-consciously developed, or when aspects of English are remade in the image of another language. Since the Renaissance, Latin and Greek have been an important presence in British poetry and prose. This is partly because of the importance of the ideals and ideologies founded and elaborated on Roman and. Greek models. Latin quotations and latinate English have always been ways to represent, scrutinize, or satirize the influential values associated with Rome. The importance of Latin and Greek is also due to the fact that they have helped to form and define a variety of British social groups. Lawyers,. Catholics, and British gentlement invested in Latin as one source of their distinction from non-professionals, from Protestants, and from the unleisured. British attitudes toward Greek and Latin have been highly charged because the animus that existed between groups has also been directed toward these languages themselves. English Literature and Ancient Languages is a study of literary uses of language contact, of English literature in conjunction with Latin and Greek. While the book's. emphasis is literary, that is formal and verbal, its goal is to discover how social interests and cultural ideas are, and are not, mediated through language. - |

Teaching of Modern Languages
$45 Teaching a foreign language to adult beginners is very difficult. How many do not maintain their interest beyond the first three months! In most cases the reason is that the teacher is employing two strange sets of terms to the student, as the terminology and processes of grammar are as unknown as the language being studied. In the past, very little foreign language teaching was done. However, the advent of audio-visual aids has acted as a spur in the classroom, and many scientific and technological advances in the outside world have produced what amounts to completely new conditions. The popular catchword is communication, and the present conception of the role of language in both the educational and the economic situation is one of usefulness. |

Beyond Textbooks
$32 Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement. |

This stimulating collection presents cutting edge research in the field and identifies major avenues for future theoretical and applied work. Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks
$49.95 Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes. |

Alien Neighbors, Foreign Friends
$32 Between the early 1900s and the late 1950s, the attitudes of white Californians toward their Asian American neighbors evolved from outright hostility to relative acceptance. Charlotte Brooks examines this transformation through the lens of California’s urban housing markets, arguing that the perceived foreignness of Asian Americans, which initially stranded them in segregated areas, eventually facilitated their integration into neighborhoods that rejected other minorities. Against the backdrop of cold war efforts to win Asian hearts and minds, whites who saw little difference between Asians and Asian Americans increasingly advocated the latter group’s access to middle-class life and the residential areas that went with it. But as they transformed Asian Americans into a “model minority,” whites purposefully ignored the long backstory of Chinese and Japanese Americans’ early and largely failed attempts to participate in public and private housing programs. As Brooks tells this multifaceted story, she draws on a broad range of sources in multiple languages, giving voice to an array of community leaders, journalists, activists, and homeowners—and insightfully conveying the complexity of racialized housing in a multiracial society. |

African Foreign Policy and Diplomacy from Antiquity to the 21st Century
$105 Africa is a crucible of culture and heritage with a complex history. Indigenous tribal practices and preexisting values were altered dramatically, either by force or as a result of the Christian and Islamic cultures that spread throughout the continent. Later, the domineering forces of European colonial nations brought even greater change. Africa emerged from its colonization an amalgam of diverse and conflicting traditions, legacies, values, and languages. Consequently, these developments have had a wide impact on the formulation and execution of African foreign policy and diplomacy today. |

Educating for Advanced Foreign Language Capacities
$44.95 Advanced language learning has only recently begun to capture the interest and attention of applied linguists and professionals in language education in the United States. In this breakthrough volume, experts in the field lay the groundwork for approaching the increasingly important role of advanced language learning in the larger context of multilingual societies, globalization, and security. This volume presents both general and theoretical insights and language-specific considerations in college classrooms spanning a range of languages, from the commonly taught languages of English, French, and German to the less commonly taught Farsi, Korean, Norwegian, and Russian. Among theoretical frameworks likely to be conducive to imagining and fostering instructed advancedness in a second language, this volume highlights a cognitive-semantic approach. The theoretical and data-based findings make clear that advanced learners in particular are characterized by the capacity to make situated choices from across the entire language system, from vocabulary and grammar to discourse features, which suggests the need for a text-oriented, meaning-driven approach to language teaching, learning, and research. This volume also considers whether and how information structuring in second-language composition reveals first-language preferences of grammaticized concepts. Other topics include curricular and instructional approaches to narrativity, vocabulary expansion, the demands on instructed programs for efficiency and effectiveness in order to assure advanced levels, and learners' ability to function in professional contexts with their diverse oral and written genre requirements. Finally, the volume probes the role and nature of assessment as a measurement tool for both researching and assessing advanced language learning and as an essential component of improving programs. |

$13.49 If foreign words and phrases are your bete noire, here is a superb reference that offers coverage of over 8,000 foreign words and phrases that are in regular use in English today. Readers will find clear definitions of words such as fandango, futon, falsetto, basmati, bistro, nouvelle cousine--and many other words found in everyday speech as well as in musical direction, the arts, food, medicine, science (such as the very different meanings of gamma in astronomy, chemistry, physics, and photography), literature and belles-lettres. As one would expect in a language as global as English, the Dictionary draws words from a wide array of languages, including Afrikaans, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindustani, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Turkish. The entries are browsable, but also authoritative, with detailed information on each word or phrase, including any alternative spellings, the date of the word's introduction into English, its language or origin and original spelling, its definition, and notes on usage and other points of interest. The etymologies are often curious: ukelele, for instance, is Hawaiian for jumping flea and yakuza, the Japanese word for gangster, literally means 8-9-3 (the worst possible hand in a popular gambling game). Quotations have been liberally sprinkled throughout to illustrate how the words are used in context. Here then is a book that is sine qua non (absolutely indispensable) for all reference shelves. |

In many ways, it is precisely the book I have been searching for to use in my own programming languages course. This book melds the two approaches very well." -- David Musicant, Carleton College |

An Introduction to Formal Languages and Automata
$85.95 Written to address the fundamentals of formal languages, automata, and computability, An Introduction to Formal Languages and Automata provides an accessible, student-friendly presentation of all material essential to an introductory Theory of Computation course. It is designed to familiarize students with the foundations and principles of computer science and to strengthen the students' ability to carry out formal and rigorous mathematical arguments. In the new Fifth Edition, Peter Linz continues to offer a straightforward, uncomplicated treatment of formal languages and automata and avoids excessive mathematical detail so that students may focus on and understand the underlying principles. In an effort to further the accessibility and comprehension of the text, the author has added new illustrative examples and exercises throughout. There is a substantial amount of new material in the form of two new appendices, and a CD-ROM of JFLAP exercises authored by Susan Rodger of Duke University. The first appendix is an entire chapter on finite-state transducers. This optional chapter can be used to prepare students for further related study. The second appendix offers a brief introduction to JFLAP; an interactive software tool that is of great help in both learning the material and in teaching the course. Many of the exercises in the text require creating structures that are complicated and that have to be tested for correctness. JFLAP can greatly reduce students’ time spent on testing as well as help them visualize abstract concepts. The CD-ROM that accompanies this fifth edition expands this and offers exercises specific for JFLAP. Instructor Resources: -Instructor Manual -PowerPoint Lecture Outlines |

Pedagogical Norms for Second and Foreign Language Learning and Teaching
$135 The concept of Pedagogical Norm is grounded in both sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic principles. Pedagogical norms guide the selection and sequencing of target language features for language teaching and learning. This book both situates and expands on this concept highlighting the interaction of research and pedagogy. The papers collectively illustrate how the concept of pedagogical norm applies to all components of language, including phonology, morphology, syntax, and discourse. The book begins with a discussion of definitions including papers that trace the history of the concept and define what is meant by norms. Also included are papers that apply the concept of pedagogical norms in specific contexts (e.g., intonation, morphology) and to specific languages. Finally, pedagogical norms are extended beyond the more traditional areas of grammatical competence to such disparate areas as listening, discourse, and circumlocution. |
