Connecting Mathematics for Elementary Teachers Connecting Mathematics for Elementary Teachers
$14.99

This book provides general descriptions of children’s learning and is intended to help show how children approach mathematics differently than adults. By connecting children’s thinking to our own learning, we hope that this book will improve understanding of both mathematics and children’s thinking, thereby enhancing the teaching of mathematics to children. The more you understand mathematics and how children think about mathematics, the better teacher you will be!   Each chapter section contains insights and examples of how children come to understand mathematics.  Many of the descriptions of how children learn are based on research, but some are based on the authors’ personal experiences with helping children learn mathematics.  As appropriate, the authors also include information on the “why” behind certain mathematical topics, how to incorporate manipulatives into the classroom, and some activities to try. Each section also has “Questions for Discussion” to encourage reflection while learning. At the end of each section are “Problems and Exercises” that are specifically designed to help show how children learn mathematics. The material is presented by topic, following the standard topics covered in a traditional mathematics for future elementary or middle school teacher's course. Construction Mathematics Construction Mathematics
$32.95

Taking a starting point below that of GCSE level, by assuming no prior mathematical knowledge, Surinder Virdi and Roy Baker take the reader step by step through the mathematical requirements for Level 2 and 3 Building and Construction courses. Unlike the majority of basic level maths texts available, this book focuses exclusively on mathematics as it is applied in actual construction practice. As such, topics specific to the construction industry are presented, as well as essential areas for Level 2 craft NVQs - for example, costing calculations, labor costs, cost of materials and setting out of building components. End of chapter exercises cover a range of theoretical as well as practical problems commonly found in construction practice, and two project-based assignments give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained. Answers to all exercises are included at the end of book. A chapter detailing the use of a scientific calculator for performing construction calculations will prove invaluable for students with no prior experience of their use. Construction Mathematics addresses all the mathematical requirements of Level 2 construction NVQs from City & Guilds/CITB and Edexcel courses, including the BTEC First Diploma in Construction. Additional coverage of the core unit Analytical Methods from BTEC National Construction, Civil Engineering, and Building Services courses makes this an essential revision aid to students who do not have Level 2 mathematics experience before commencing their BTEC National studies, or any reader who wishes to refresh their mathematics knowledge. Solutions to the assignments are available to lecturers only at http://textbooks.elsevier.com To access the solutions click on the tab at the top right of the page. You must be registered and logged in to view this tab. * Focuses on construction topics not found in traditional technician-level mathematics textbooks - essential for students learning how to apply mathematics in building and construction * Content matched to the learning outcomes of CITB / City & Guilds and Edexcel construction courses at Levels 2 and 3, including the core unit Analytical Methods for BTEC National, and the new VGCSE in Construction and the Built Environment * Technically accurate construction images provide graphical representation of key construction scenarios in which mathematics topics are introduced

Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement.

General textbooks, attempting to cover three thousand or so years of mathematical history, must necessarily oversimplify just about everything, the practice of which can scarcely promote a critical approach to the subject. To counter this, History of Mathematics offers deeper coverage of key select topics, providing students with material that could encourage more critical thinking. It also includes the proofs of important results which are typically neglected in the modern history of mathematics curriculum.

This is a concise introductory textbook for a one semester course in the history and philosophy of mathematics. It is written for mathematics majors, philosophy students, history of science students and secondary school mathematics teachers. The only prerequisite is a solid command of pre-calculus mathematics. It is shorter than the standard textbooks in that area and thus more accessible to students who have trouble coping with vast amounts of reading. Furthermore, there are many detailed explanations of the important mathematical procedures actually used by famous mathematicians, giving more mathematically talented students a greater opportunity to learn the history and philosophy by way of problem solving. Several important philosophical topics are pursued throughout the text, giving the student an opportunity to come to a full and consistent knowledge of their development. These topics include infinity, the nature of motion, and Platonism. This book offers, in fewer pages, a deep penetration into the key mathematical and philosophical aspects of the history of mathematics.

Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks
$49.95

Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes.

MATHEMATICS OF FINANCE By THEODORE E. RAIFORD Department of Mathematics University of Michigan GINN AND COMPANY BOSTON NEW YORK CHICAGO ATLANTA DALLAS COLUMBUS SAN FRANCISCO TORONTO LONDON COPYRIGHT, 1945, BY GINN AND COMPANY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 440.7 ttbe fltbcnaeum rcg GINN AND COMPANY PO PUIETOHS BOSTON U. S. A. PREFACE To the student of pure mathematics the term mathematics of finance often seems somewhat of a misnomer since, in solving the problems usu ally presented in textbooks under this title, the types of mathematical operations involved are very few and very elementary. Indeed, in a first course in the mathematics of finance the development of the most impor tant formulas usually involves no greater difficulties than those encountered in the study of geometric progressions. Whether it is because of this seeming simplicity or because of a tendency to limit the problems to the very simplest kinds, the usual presentation has shown a decided lack of generality and flexibility in many of the formulas and their applications. Since no new mathematical principles are involved, a student who can develop and understand the simpler appearing formulas should be able to develop easily the more general for mulas, which are much more useful. And no student should use important formulas whose derivation and meaning, and hence possibilities and limi tations, he does not understand. There is a marked preference in many places in mathematics for presenting general definitions and formulas first, with the special cases following naturally from them. Tn trigonometry, for instance, the main importance of the trigonometric functions of an angle is emphasized by presenting first the generaldefinitions of these functions then the defi nitions of the functions of an acute angle in terms of the elements of a right triangle follow naturally as special cases. Up to the present time, textbooks in the mathematics of finance have not followed this plan of presentation. The foregoing considerations, plus years of experience in teaching the subject, sometimes with the more general formulas presented first and sometimes with the limited formulas presented first, have caused the author to feel the need of such a presentation as is attempted here. As everyone in this field of work is aware, the major problem is the thorough under standing of annuities and complete facility in their evaluation. The late Professor Glover, whose valuable and comprehensive tables for use in problems in the field of finance are well known, often remarked that few teachers of the subject realize the power and facility to be gained from a thorough appreciation of the double superscript notation in annuity formulas. The method of presentation emphasizes the point that very few funda mental formulas are necessary for handling financial problems if these formulas are thoroughly understood and appreciated. Mathematical forms are of inestimable value, as evidenced by their use in solving ordinary Tab

History Textbooks and the Wars in Asia History Textbooks and the Wars in Asia
$148

Over the past fifteen years Northeast Asia has witnessed growing intraregional exchanges and interactions, especially in the realms of culture and economy. Still, the region cannot escape from the burden of history. This book examines the formation of historical memory in four Northeast Asian societies (China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) and the United States focusing on the period from the beginning of the Sino-Japanese war in 1931 until the formal conclusion of the Pacific War with the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951. The contributors analyse the recent efforts of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese scholars to write a common history' of Northeast Asia and question the underlying motivations for their efforts and subsequent achievements. In doing so, they contend that the greatest obstacle to reconciliation in Northeast Asia lies in the existence of divided, and often conflicting, historical memories. The book argues that a more fruitful approach lies in understanding how historical memory has evolved in each country and been incorporated into respective master narratives. Through uncovering the existence of different master narratives, it is hoped, citizens will develop a more self-critical, self-reflective approach to their own history and that such an introspective effort has the potential to lay the foundation for greater self- and mutual understanding and eventual historical reconciliation in the region. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Asian history, Asian education and international relations in East Asia.

Designing History in East Asian Textbooks Designing History in East Asian Textbooks

This book analyses the efforts throughout East Asia to deploy education for purposes of political socialization, and in particular in order to shape notions of identity. The chapters also examine the trend of common textbook initiatives', which have recently emerged in East Asia with the aim of helping to defuse tensions arguably fuelled by existing practices of mutual (mis)representation. These are analysed in relation to the East Asian political context, and compared with previous and ongoing endeavours in other parts of the world, particularly Europe, which have been keenly observed by East Asian practitioners. Written by a group of international education experts, chapters discuss the enduring focus on the role of curricula in inculcating homogenous visions of the national self, and indeed homogenized visions of significant 'others'. Including contributions from scholars and curriculum developers involved personally in the writing of national and multi-national history textbooks this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian education, Asian history and comparative education studies. ? This text represents a new entry level course in mathematics for students in programs such as mathematics, the sciences and engineering, which require additional courses in mathematics. With enough material for a two semester course, the text is written at approximately the level of introductory calculus. Principles and Practice of Mathematics was developed over a four year period, under the direction of COMAP, with NSF support. It is an alternative point of entry into the undergraduate mathematics curriculum, one which presents for students a wide spectrum of the contemporary world of mathematics. By emphasizing the breadth and variety of modern mathematical inquiry and applications, the text provides a view of the subject that is not experienced by students in the traditional calculus course. The author team and advisors were selected for their experience with undergraduate education. Among our authors are several who have written successful textbooks. The entire project has evolved under the editorial supervision of veteran COMAP author, Walter Meyer, Adolph University.
An Invitation to Discrete Mathematics by Matousek, Jiri Nesetril, Jaroslav Edition ILL, 2 An Invitation to Discrete Mathematics by Matousek, Jiri Nesetril, Jaroslav Edition ILL, 2
$31.99

This book is a clear and self-contained introduction to discrete mathematics. Aimed mainly at undergraduate and early graduate students of mathematics and computer science. It is written with the goal of stimulating interest in mathematics and an active, problem-solving approach to the presented material. The reader is led to an understanding of the basic principles and methods of actually doing mathematics (and having fun at that). Being more narrowly focused than many discrete mathematics textbooks and treating selected topics in an unusual depth and from several points of view, the book reflects the conviction of the authors, active and internationally renowned mathematicians, that the most important gain from studying mathematics is the cultivation of clear and logical thinking and habits useful for attacking new problems. More than 400 enclosed exercises with a wide range of difficulty, many of them accompanied by hints for solution, support this approach to teaching. The readers will appreciate the lively and informal style of the text accompanied by more than 200 drawings and diagrams. Specialists in various parts of science with a basic mathematical education wishing to apply discrete mathematics in their field can use the book as a useful source, and even experts in combinatorics may occasionally learn from pointers to research literature or from presentations of recent results. Invitation to Discrete Mathematics should make a delightful reading both for beginners and for mathematical professionals. The main topics include: elementary counting problems, asymptotic estimates, partially ordered sets, basic graph theory and graph algorithms, finite projective planes, elementary probability and the probabilistic method, generating functions, Ramsey's theorem, and combinatorial applications of linear algebra. General mathematical notions going beyond the high-school level are thoroughly explained in the introductory chapter. An appendix summarizes the undergraduate algebra needed in some of the more advanced sections of the book.

The book presents the main features of the Wasan tradition, which is the indigenous mathematics that developed in Japan during the Edo period. (1600-1868). It begins with a description of the first mathematical textbooks published in the 17th century, then shifts to the work of the two leading mathematicians of this tradition, Seki Takakazu and Takebe Katahiro. The book provides substantial information on the historical and intellectual context, the role played by the Chinese mathematical treatises introduced at the late 16th century, and an analysis of Seki’s and Takebe’s contribution to the development of algebra and calculus in Japan.

$47.49

Celebrating 100 years in print with Cambridge, this newly updated edition includes a foreword by T. W. Körner, describing the huge influence the book has had on the teaching and development of mathematics worldwide. There are few textbooks in mathematics as well-known as Hardy's Pure Mathematics. Since its publication in 1908, this classic book has inspired successive generations of budding mathematicians at the beginning of their undergraduate courses. In its pages, Hardy combines the enthusiasm of the missionary with the rigor of the purist in his exposition of the fundamental ideas of the differential and integral calculus, of the properties of infinite series and of other topics involving the notion of limit. Hardy's presentation of mathematical analysis is as valid today as when first written: students will find that his economical and energetic style of presentation is one that modern authors rarely come close to.

Reconceptualizing Mathematics Reconceptualizing Mathematics
$64.99

There is today a greater awareness that elementary mathematics is rich in important ideas and that its instruction requires far more than simply knowing the “math facts” and a handful of algorithms. Mathematics courses for teachers must reflect the intellectual depth and challenge of the elementary school curriculum. The Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) recommends that the preparation of mathematics teachers include courses that develop a “deep understanding of the mathematics they teach,” that are designed to “develop careful reasoning and ‘common sense’ in analyzing conceptual relationships, . . . that develop the habits of mind of a mathematical thinker and that demonstrate flexible, interactive styles of teaching” (CBMS, 2000, pp. 7-8). Judy Sowder, Larry Sowder, and Susan Nickerson recognize and accept the challenge of presenting mathematics to teachers in a manner that addresses these recommendations. In doing so they provide instruction that will lead teachers of mathematics to reconceptualize the mathematics they often think they already know, thus allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics they will teach. The authors believe that teachers must know mathematics differently than most people do. Teachers need to know the mathematics they teach in a way that allows them to hold conversations about mathematical ideas and mathematical thinking with their students. A persistent pursuit of explanation is a hallmark of a classroom in which learning is taking place. A common axiom is that teachers teach the way they were taught. Prospective teachers are unlikely to demonstrate flexible, interactive styles of teaching unless they have experienced mathematics taught this way. Instructors of the Reconceptualizing Mathematics courses, however, may not have experienced such instruction themselves. Thus the authors provide many forms of instructional assistance to help instructors better understand the mathematics their prospective teachers need to know, to begin to model teaching strategies that these prospective teachers will be expected to use in their own classrooms, and to assist them in many ways throughout the course.

The Nature of Mathematics and the Mathematics of Nature The Nature of Mathematics and the Mathematics of Nature
$315

Chemistry, physics and biology are by their nature genuinely difficult. Mathematics, however, is man-made, and therefore not as complicated. Two ideas form the basis for this book: 1) to use ordinary mathematics to describe the simplicity in the structure of mathematics and 2) to develop new branches of mathematics to describe natural sciences. Mathematics can be described as the addition, subtraction or multiplication of planes. Using the exponential scale the authors show that the addition of planes gives the polyhedra, or any solid. The substraction of planes gives saddles. The multiplication of planes gives the general saddle equations and the multispirals. The equation of symmetry is derived, which contains the exponential scale with its functions for solids, the complex exponentials with the nodal surfaces, and the GD (Gauss Distribution) mathematics with finite periodicity. Piece by piece, the authors have found mathematical functions for the geometrical descriptions of chemical structures and the structure building operations. Using the mathematics for dilatation; twins, trillings, fourlings and sixlings are made, and using GD mathematics these are made periodic. This description of a structure is the nature of mathematics itself. Crystal structures and 3D mathematics are synonyms. Mathematics are used to describe rod packings, Olympic rings and defects in solids. Giant molecules such as cubosomes, the DNA double helix, and certain building blocks in protein structures are also described mathematically.
