The Philosophy Behind Homeschooling
Home schooling is also called home education as this is an educational system that is basically taught at home, typically by grandparents, parents or tutors rather than the children going to school.
Parents are generally under stress and concerned about their children’s safety and education and they fear that they are not doing enough for their little ones. Many parents hate the regular schooling experience as they find their children tied down to the regular educational model of education that is well defined by books, regular classes, workbooks, grades, and the old regular norms.
Some parents find textbooks and regular curriculums somewhat artificial because they avoid the children from expressing their full growth. Regular education usually gives children maximum knowledge but generally, this is a myth that’s going on through conventional modes of education. Traditional education actually dilutes child’s learning and makes it boring and tedious, unrelated to their real life at home.
Children love to read colorful books and they love to be read to. They generally learn by explore new things and love to be on their own. Home schooling mainly concentrates on five basic areas, like-
Discipleship- Homeschooling starts by grasping God’s words that give wisdom. Children must learn to love God and understand his teachings.
Disciplined- Homeschool teaches basic subjects like math and language, and arts that are the base of any learning system.
Discussion- During homeschooling, the kids spend maximum time on reading history, literature and other subjects. Parents feel that they should nourish the child’s mind with the best out from the traditional schools and inculcate some education on the fine arts.
Discovery- Parents always direct children into natural learning by teaching them the basics about nature, science, creative arts and all that interests them. Basic goal of a parent is to stimulate the child towards new opportunities for creativity, curiosity and discovery.
Optional studies- Home schooling develops children gradually, according to their abilities, by concentrating on their natural talents and interests, life skills and development of the community.
Home generally gives children warmth and freedom. Education usually disciplines a child and develops the child’s relationship with their parents. This point is utilized by home centered learning model.
Parent gain freedom when they know that their child has adjusted well to home schooling pattern. God has send parents as guides. Independence and joy flows with cooperation and love as that the path shown by God. Parents usually forget learning is basically achieved when the children grasp and their requirement. Parents usually force their children to learn as per their choice and then they think that they are providing them with the best education. In this way, the children land up feeling miserable, as they are not learning things that they need to or love to. The difference in homeschooling and normal schooling is that in homeschooling the education is focused on the child’s individual behavior and learning style, and also focuses mainly on the child’s individual interest to learn and the ability to understand. On the other hand, in normal schooling the educational system is highly generalized.

Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks
$49.95 Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes. |

Buddhist Philosophy
$24.95 The Buddhist philosophical tradition is vast, internally diverse, and comprises texts written in a variety of canonical languages. It is hence often difficult for those with training in Western philosophy who wish to approach this tradition for the first time to know where to start, and difficult for those who wish to introduce and teach courses in Buddhist philosophy to find suitable textbooks that adequately represent the diversity of the tradition, expose students to important primary texts in reliable translations, that contextualize those texts, and that foreground specifically philosophical issues. Buddhist Philosophy fills that lacuna. It collects important philosophical texts from each major Buddhist tradition. Each text is translated and introduced by a recognized authority in Buddhist studies. Each introduction sets the text in context and introduces the philosophical issues it addresses and arguments it presents, providing a useful and authoritative guide to reading and to teaching the text. The volume is organized into topical sections that reflect the way that Western philosophers think about the structure of the discipline, and each section is introduced by an essay explaining Buddhist approaches to that subject matter, and the place of the texts collected in that section in the enterprise. This volume is an ideal single text for an intermediate or advanced course in Buddhist philosophy, and makes this tradition immediately accessible to the philosopher or student versed in Western philosophy coming to Buddhism for the first time. It is also ideal for the scholar or student of Buddhist studies who is interested specifically in the philosophical dimensions of the Buddhist tradition. |

Philosophy: A New Introduction, 1st Edition
$103.49 Did it ever cross your mind that all introduction to philosophy textbooks are the same? Well, here's the antidote to that way of thinking. PHILOSOPHY: A NEW INTRODUCTION is a wide-ranging exploration of numerous fields of philosophy. All of the standard fields are here: metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of religion, and ethics. What isn't so standard is the inclusion of fields such as Political Theory, Aesthetics, Feminism, and the Philosophy of Culture--all via a provocative set of philosophers and readings rarely, if ever, found in an introductory textbook. Featuring editors well-versed in Historical, Analytic, Pragmatic, and Continental schools of thought, this book offers as diverse a set of perspectives and genres of thought as you're ever apt to find in an introductory text. Born out of the contention that students and scholars alike come to philosophy with a desire to study a wider array of interests and concerns than many traditional textbooks would admit, PHILOSOPHY: A NEW INTRODUCTION seeks to expand the limits of the introductory canon and to give introductory students a much more accurate glimpse into the expansive worlds of inquiry in which contemporary philosophers actually dwell. |

Beyond Textbooks
$32 Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement. |

Jewish Philosophy and Western Culture
$84 This is one of the first textbooks to try to set the entire discipline of Jewish philosophy in its proper cultural and historical contexts. In so doing, it introduces the vibrant Jewish philosophical tradition to students while also making a significant contribution to inter-religious dialogue. Victor J Seidler argues that the dominant Platonic tradition in the West has led to a form of cultural ethics which asserts false superiority in its relationships with others. He offers a critical reappraisal of the philosophical underpinnings of this western Christian culture which for so long has viewed Judaism with hostility. Examining the work of seminal Jewish thinkers such as Philo, Buber, Mendelsohn, Herman Cohen, Leo Baeck, Levinas, Rosenzweig and others, the author argues for a code of ethics which prioritises particular and personal moral responsibility rather than the impersonal and universal emphases of the Greek tradition. His provocative and original overview of Jewish philosophy uncovers a vital and neglected tradition of thought which works against the likelihood of a Holocaust recurring. |

History Textbooks and the Wars in Asia
$148 Over the past fifteen years Northeast Asia has witnessed growing intraregional exchanges and interactions, especially in the realms of culture and economy. Still, the region cannot escape from the burden of history. This book examines the formation of historical memory in four Northeast Asian societies (China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) and the United States focusing on the period from the beginning of the Sino-Japanese war in 1931 until the formal conclusion of the Pacific War with the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951. The contributors analyse the recent efforts of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese scholars to write a common history' of Northeast Asia and question the underlying motivations for their efforts and subsequent achievements. In doing so, they contend that the greatest obstacle to reconciliation in Northeast Asia lies in the existence of divided, and often conflicting, historical memories. The book argues that a more fruitful approach lies in understanding how historical memory has evolved in each country and been incorporated into respective master narratives. Through uncovering the existence of different master narratives, it is hoped, citizens will develop a more self-critical, self-reflective approach to their own history and that such an introspective effort has the potential to lay the foundation for greater self- and mutual understanding and eventual historical reconciliation in the region. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Asian history, Asian education and international relations in East Asia. |

Designing History in East Asian Textbooks
$148 This book analyses the efforts throughout East Asia to deploy education for purposes of political socialization, and in particular in order to shape notions of identity. The chapters also examine the trend of common textbook initiatives', which have recently emerged in East Asia with the aim of helping to defuse tensions arguably fuelled by existing practices of mutual (mis)representation. These are analysed in relation to the East Asian political context, and compared with previous and ongoing endeavours in other parts of the world, particularly Europe, which have been keenly observed by East Asian practitioners. Written by a group of international education experts, chapters discuss the enduring focus on the role of curricula in inculcating homogenous visions of the national self, and indeed homogenized visions of significant 'others'. Including contributions from scholars and curriculum developers involved personally in the writing of national and multi-national history textbooks this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian education, Asian history and comparative education studies. ? Gotelind Mller is Professor of Chinese Studies, University of Heidelberg, Germany |

On Ancient Philosophy by Peterman, John Edition ILL, 1
$20.99 ON ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY examines ancient Greek thought from the world views of Homer and Hesiod through the developments of and challenges to rational inquiry in the Presocratics to the multi-layered dynamic approaches to inquiry and criticism in the dialogues of Plato and the writings of Aristotle to the fading echoes of this inquiry in the post-Aristotelian Hellenistic schools. The discussion of the Presocratics is given the same amount of space and detail as those on Plato and Aristotle. This book provides readers with the philosophical and cultural background in order to better appreciate and evaluate the philosophical contributions of these thinkers. The roles of rhetoric, religion, war, politics and the study of nature as the impetus to inquiry instead of doctrine are all explained and connected. Many of our textbooks and discussions use the ideas of these ancient thinkers only as points of departure, frequently as examples of misguided reasoning, instead of as our peers facing similar problems and using similar methods to confront them. The intention here is to help readers gain a positive understanding of their ideas and the language they used to express them. It is not meant to be an interpretation of these ideas so much as an approach to help readers understand the issues, create better informed questions and opinions about them, and know where to find further information to pursue their inquiries. A glossary of Greek terms is included to help negotiate the centuries of translations and interpretations that have often obscured as much as revealed the ideas of these vital thinkers. |

Language, Ideology and Japanese History Textbooks by Barnard, Christopher Edition , 1
$65.81 The Japanese history textbook debate is one that keeps making the news, particularly with reference to claims that Japan has never 'apologised properly' for its actions between 1931 and 1945, and that it is one of the few liberal, democratic countries in which textbooks are controlled and authorised by the central government. There are frequent protests, both from within Japan and from overseas, that a biased, nationalistic history is taught in Japanese schools. This is the first time that all the authorised textbooks currently in use have been analysed using a critical discourse that is anchored firmly in the theory of 'language within society', elucidating the meanings and associated ideologies created by the language of the textbooks. |

Changing Histories: Japanese and South African Textbooks in Comparison (1945-1995)
$28.83 Hauptbeschreibung The teaching of history in South African and Japanese schools has attracted sustained criticism for the alleged attempts to conceal the controversial aspects of their countries' past and to inculcate ideologies favourable to the ruling regimes. This book is the first attempt to systematically compare the ways in which education bureaucracy in both nations dealt with opposition and critics in the period from ca. 1945 to 1995, when both countries were dominated by single-party governments for most of the fifty years. The author argues that both South African and Japanese education bureaucracy did not overtly express its intentions in the curriculum documents or in the textbooks, but found ways to enhance its authority through a range of often subtle measures. A total of eight themes in 60 officially approved Standard 6 South African and Japanese middle-school history textbooks have been selected to demonstrate the changes and continuity. This work hopes to contribute to the existing literature of comparative history by drawing lessons that would probably not have emerged from the study of either country by itself. On the Philosophy of Mind
$13.49 With questions on such topics as "Can you know that other people see red the way you do?" "How is it that you are the same person throughout your life, even though the cells of your body are continually changing?" and "Is it possible to survive one's bodily death?," this book aims to inspire students to work out solutions to fundamental philosophical problems for themselves. Animated by the hope that with prior opinions about a topic students will have a much easier time delving into the literature in this field, ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF MIND is filled with thought experiments as well as more concrete philosophical problems that arise in actual experiments in neuroscience and psychiatry. Not assuming any background in philosophy, the book is accessible to beginning students, but simultaneously, Montero's unique approach will prove thought provoking for students with prior background in the subject too.THE WADSWORTH PHILOSOPHICAL TOPICS SERIES presents readers with concise, timely, and insightful introductions to a variety of traditional and contemporary philosophical subjects.
