Political Science Textbooks
Where can I donate used text books?
I have a couple of used college textbooks ranging from biology to political science. Some are standard hardcover texts, some are soft cover. I don’t want to throw them out, but the local libraries in my area won’t accept them. Does anyone know of any organization, that may accept them?
Maybe you could try your local Freecycle group? (http://www.freecycle.org to find one in your area). There are always people willing to take things that you no longer need.

Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks
$49.95 Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes. |

Designing History in East Asian Textbooks
$140 This book analyses the efforts throughout East Asia to deploy education for purposes of political socialization, and in particular in order to shape notions of identity. Written by a group of international education experts chapters discuss the enduring focus on the role of curricula in inculcating homogenous visions of the national self, and indeed homogenized visions of significant 'others'. The book also looks at the alternative approaches to textbook design, including the new trend of common textbook initiatives which operate with the aim of defusing the tensions that mutual representation have tended to fuel. Modern Political Science
$30.95 Since emerging in the late nineteenth century, political science has undergone a radical shift--from constructing grand narratives of national political development to producing empirical studies of individual political phenomena. What caused this change? Modern Political Science --the first authoritative history of Anglophone political science--argues that the field's transformation shouldn't be mistaken for a case of simple progress and increasing scientific precision. On the contrary, the book shows that political science is deeply historically contingent, driven both by its own inherited ideas and by the wider history in which it has developed. Focusing on the United States and the United Kingdom, and the exchanges between them, Modern Political Science contains contributions from leading political scientists, political theorists, and intellectual historians from both sides of the Atlantic. Together they provide a compelling account of the development of political science, its relation to other disciplines, the problems it currently faces, and possible solutions to these problems. Building on a growing interest in the history of political science, Modern Political Science is necessary reading for anyone who wants to understand how political science got to be what it is today--or what it might look like tomorrow. |

Political Theory and Social Science
$85 A critique of academic political theory, this book begins with a synoptic critical analysis of the past and present of the field with particular emphasis on its cognitive and practical relationship to politics as well as on its relationship to philosophy. One basic claim is that political theory is not sui generis and that it cannot be divorced from the lineage and prospects of political and social science as a whole. Theauthor argues that social science, whatever its methods, is necessarily a metapractical or interpretive enterprise which can be fruitfully illuminated from a perspective that draws upon the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. |

How to Map Arguments in Political Science
$16 As essential and accessible introduction and critique of the main types of explantion in political science. Essential reading for students and scholars alike. - ;To venture into explanation of political action we need some map of our basic options: what kinds of explanations are out there? Even advanced students and scholars can find the landscape difficult to chart. We confront a bewildering maze of partial typologies, contrasting uses of terms, and debate over what counts as explanation. This book makes an argument about the most useful first cut into explanations of action. It illustrates the map with reference to political examples and a. wide range of political science literature, but the scheme applies even more broadly across the social sciences and history. Common terms form the sectors of the map: structural, institutional, ideational, and psychological logics. This book's novelties lie in arguments about how to best define these terms. It narrows them into distinct mechanisms, arriving at basic segments of causal logic into which all explanations of action can be broken down. It also makes them compatible, however, such that we could imagine a world in which all operated while debating how much each caused any given action. Four benefits follow. The typology directs our attention to the most basic debates about what causes what. Its framework is systematic and exhaustive, bounding our explanatory universe. It defines our main approaches in ways that facilitate both competition and combination. Lastly, it leads to revisions of prevailing. views on philosophy of science and research design to encourage more open and rigorous debates. Graduate students will find no other overviews of comparable scope and precision. Scholars of all theoretical inclinations will encounter provocative challenges to their views of theorizing and use of terms. - |

The book traces the connections between electoral politics in Congress and other important political phenomena and makes questions of representation and responsibility its chief normative concern. |

How to Map Arguments in Political Science by Parsons, Craig Edition ILL, 0
$30.49 In order to venture into explanations of political action we need a map of our basic options: what types of examinations are out there? Even advanced students and scholars can find the landscape difficult to navigate. They confront a bewildering maze of partial typologies, contrasting uses of terms, and debates over what counts as an explanation. How to Map Arguments in Political Science provides a basic map and toolkit for analysis in political science that references political examples and a wide range of material from the political science literature. While common terms--structural, institutional, ideational, and psychological logics--form the sectors of the map, this book is unique in its arguments regarding how to best define these terms. Adopting a systematic and exhaustive framework, it defines the main analytical approaches in ways that facilitate both competition and combination. Finally, it leads to revisions of prevailing views on philosophy of science and research design to encourage more open and rigorous debates. |

Social Science Learning in Schools
$30.95 Social Science Learning in Schools: Perspective and Challenges locates the teaching and learning of social science within the larger perspective and aims of education. It emphasizes the need to take the teaching of social science beyond the confines of contemporary ideological debates, into the realm of pedagogical theory. It presents critical perspectives on curriculum design, textbook development and social science pedagogy. Discussions on pedagogy are situated in analyses of Eklayva’s social science textbooks which were in use for over 15 years in government schools in Madhya Pradesh. The book explores the integral role of the teacher, importance of textbooks, and methods of social science enquiry in school teaching-learning. It interrogates integrated approaches to social science education, and notions of nationalism and identity. The book will serve as a seminal social science text for Indian elementary teacher education programmes. University departments of education, research institutions, NGOs and development organisations working in education, literacy and child development will find it an invaluable elementary education resource. |

Beyond Textbooks
$32 Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement. |

Political Theory, Science Fiction, and Utopian Literature
$85 Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed is of interest to political theorists partly because of its association with anarchism and partly because it is thought to represent a turning point in the history of utopian/dystopian political thought and literature and of science fiction. Published in 1974, it marked a revival of utopianism after decades of dystopian writing. According to this widely accepted view The Dispossessed represents a new kind of literary utopia, which Tom Moylan calls a "critical utopia." The present work challenges this reading of The Dispossessed and its place in the histories of utopian/dystopian literature and science fiction. It explores the difference between traditional literary utopia and novels and suggests that The Dispossessed is not a literary utopia but a novel about utopianism in politics. Le Guin's concerns have more to do with those of the novelists of the 19th century writing in the tradition of European Realism than they do with the science fiction or utopian literature. It also claims that her theory of the novel has an affinity with the ancient Greek tragedy. This implies that there is a conservatism in Le Guin's work as a creative writer, or as a novelist, which fits uneasily with her personalcommitment to anarchism. |
