Ethics for the Legal Professional, Sixth Edition Ethics for the Legal Professional, Sixth Edition
$44.99

Course:  Ethics courses taught in Legal Studies, Paralegal Studies, and Legal Assistant programs.Ethics for the Legal Professional sets the standard for professional responsibility textbooks. Now in its sixth edition, the text has been reorganized to reflect the changes in the paralegal profession.  It begins with concrete concepts that have been given some clear direction in the courts and state legislatures (UPL confidentiality and conflicts) before moving on to the more technical, rule-driven concepts (advertising, billing and fees), and then to the most abstract rules (competence, zealous representation and integrity).  Written from the viewpoint of the paralegal, this book uses plain English and an upbeat tone to keep readers engaged. It then reinforces each chapter’s learning objectives with improved end-of-chapter materials such as multiple choice, fill in the blank and true/false questions.  Unique to the 6th Edition, is end of chapter materials for classroom collaborative learning activities, hypotheticals for classroom discussion, and cases for consideration, each with their own set of questions.  Still the most popular book in its genre, the 6th Edition continues to tackle the most important ethical issues facing paralegals today in a frank, conversational style. New to this edition are 24 scenario-based videos that deal with the most common ethical situations paralegals will encounter on the job.

Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement.

Innovative Approaches to Teaching Technical Communication Innovative Approaches to Teaching Technical Communication
$18

Programs in technical writing, technical communication, and/or professional communication have recently grown in enrollment as the demand among employers for formally prepared technical writers and editors has grown. In response, scholarly treatments of the subject and the teaching of technical writing are also burgeoning, and the body of research and theory being published in this field is many times larger and more accessible than it was even a decade ago. Although many theoretical and disciplinary perspectives can potentially inform technical communication teaching, administration, and curriculum development, the actual influences on the field's canonical texts have traditionally come from a rather limited range of disciplines. Innovative Approaches to Teaching Technical Communication brings together a wide range of scholars/teachers to expand the existing canon.

Governance of Technical Education in India Governance of Technical Education in India
$9.99

Higher education, and in particular technical education, is critical to India’s aspirations of becoming a major competitive player in the global knowledge economy. The technical education system is huge and complex, and reforms are imperative. Countrywide policies continue to identify Good Governance as key to the success of reforms and investments in higher education. A Learning Forum brought together senior policymakers, leaders and experts from: five States leading in technical education (Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal); Ministry of Human Resource Development, Industry, TEQIP National Project Implementation Unit, and the World Bank. The Forum agreed to nine key governance issues that are central to Good Governance: (i) a new model of an autonomous institution; (ii) Common legal framework for governance; (iii) Strategic planning; (iv) Common quality assurance; (v) Policies for industry/academic collaboration; (vi) Professional development for faculty, leaders and Boards of Governors; (vii) Optimum utilization of resources (xiii) Mentoring institutions gaining autonomous status, and (ix) Policy to tackle faculty shortage. Chapter 1 discusses how this Good Governance agenda depends upon coordinated actions at the faculty, institutional, state, and central level; including a clear list of how each stakeholder can take action. Chapter 2 of this report contains Generic papers on the principles, challenges and common language of governance. The chapter reflects upon the issues and attitudes of state legislators and, at the other extreme, principles for governance of an autonomous institution. Chapter 3 consists of five State case studies that frankly and succinctly describe the dramatic challenges that the State governments face to ensure quality, access, inclusiveness, and relevance in technical education. The case studies documents that these states have strong and positives results from the last decade of experiments with governance reforms such as, academic and financial autonomy, block grant funding, faculty assessments, independent quality audits, and devolution of powers to Institutional Board of Governors. Chapter 4 offers a comparable, succinct and honest overview of challenges and recent reforms within governance of higher education from India, China, Europe, Japan, South Korea, U.K., and the U.S. These case studies discuss global failures and successes from balancing demands for greater institutional autonomy with the government’s need to direct strategic economic development and enhance participation in higher education.

Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks
$49.95

Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes.

Theory of Constraints in Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (Chapter 29 of Theory of Constraints Handbook) Theory of Constraints in Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (Chapter 29 of Theory of Constraints Handbook)
$6.95

This is an individual chapter of Theory of Constraints Handbook. Theory of Constraints is a highly regarded management innovation that runs contrary to conventional wisdom. TOC is best known in the Manufacturing and Distribution sectors where it originated, but services are the dominant sectors in most economies nowadays. The Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (PSTS) sector is notable because many of its services are not repeatable, thereby making TOC much harder to apply. Nevertheless, it can be done. This chapter summarizes how and why TOC has been adapted for PSTS. It includes applications for management of resources, projects, business processes, accounting, marketing, sales, strategy, and implementation. Among the benefits of TOC are faster services, greater flexibility, and a sensible re-shuffling of management priorities for profitable growth. Simply stated, TOC makes constraints work for you rather than against you. This chapter explains how practitioners can get started with TOC for services, what researchers can contribute, and what students should know.

“This book is an excellent primer. As a proponent of the art-versus-science school of technical analysis, his primary focus is on the practical aspects of chart reading and how to translate the intelligence derived from charts into investment decisions. If you have ever wondered what technical analysis is, or how you could get started doing it, this is a good place to start.” John Bollinger, CFA, CMT, President, Bollinger Capital Management   “Here is the place to discover why the RSI goes up while the price is going down, how to measure potential moves from a breakout, how not to look at a chart with preconceived notions of what the market will do--‘Let the market talk....’ The advice is above all practical. [This is] a book to own, particularly in the earlier stages of your investment career.” Michael Smyrk, STA Journal   “Finally, an easy-to-understand explanation of how technical analysis works! This primer shows investors how to spot trends and patterns in the markets that can help them choose winning stocks. Full of practical advice, this is a must have for both individual and professional investors.” Susie Gharib, Coanchor, PBS Nightly Business Report   The Best-Selling Introduction to Technical Analysis: Updated with New Examples, Techniques, and Guidance! Fully updated with new coverage of bubbles, sector rotation, and rare “black swan” market events Technical analysis offers powerful, objective tools for picking stocks and making money--and in today’s market environment, that makes it more indispensable than ever. Unfortunately, most technical analysis books confuse investors instead of enlightening them. In this clear, practical, fully updated book, Barron’s Online technical analysis columnist Michael N. Kahn introduces proven technical analysis techniques in simple language that any investor can understand and use.   Kahn explains how technical analysis works and then teaches you how to read charts and translate them into investment decisions. You’ll learn how to use technical analysis to complement your current approach to stock selection, discover what makes a stock look promising, and objectively assess both risk and reward.   This completely revised third edition contains many new examples reflecting today’s transformed market environment. You’ll find detailed new coverage of recognizing bubbles, including real estate (2006), oil (2008), and bonds (2009). Kahn presents powerful new insights into the relationship between technical analysis and market psychology and crucial, up-to-date guidance on sector rotation in rapidly changing markets. He also presents a full chapter on navigating through chaotic, once-in-a-millennium, “black-swan” market events.   Why technical analysis worksBringing real objectivity to investment decision-making Chart patterns: See the forest and the
