What are some good textbooks for self study in Calculus, physics, differential equations, and linear algebra?

In physics, i understand there is calculus based and algebra based textbooks. Can you give me both textbooks suggestions for self-study? Give me the author’s name or the ISBN code

I would visit http://www.bigwords.com and check through them. I’ve been using that site for awhile now and they search the entire internet amongst the textbook retailers and rental sites for the purpose of finding you the best deal but also to give you options. Its awesome. Saves me a lot of money and time.

Calculus Calculus

This book is designed for a three-semester or four-quarter calculus course covering single variable and multivariable calculus for mathematics, engineering, and science majors.Drawing on their decades of teaching experience, William Briggs and Lyle Cochran have created a calculus text that carries the teacher’s voice beyond the classroom. That voice–evident in the narrative, the figures, and the questions interspersed in the narrative–is a master teacher leading students to deeper levels of understanding. The authors appeal to students’ geometric intuition to introduce fundamental concepts and lay the foundation for the more rigorous development that follows. Comprehensive exercise sets have received praise for their creativity, quality, and scope.CourseSmart textbooks do not include any media or print supplements that come packaged with the bound book.

This book is a response to those instructors who feel that calculus textbooks are too big. In writing the book James Stewart asked himself: What is essential for a three-semester calculus course for scientists and engineers? Stewart's ESSENTIAL CALCULUS offers a concise approach to teaching calculus that focuses on major concepts and supports those concepts with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. Essential Calculus is only 850 pages-two-thirds the size of Stewart's other calculus texts (CALCULUS, Fifth Edition and CALCULUS, EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Fifth Edition)-and yet it contains almost all of the same topics. The author achieved this relative brevity mainly by condensing the exposition and by putting some of the features on the website, www.StewartCalculus.com. Despite the reduced size of the book, there is still a modern flavor: Conceptual understanding and technology are not neglected, though they are not as prominent as in Stewart's other books. ESSENTIAL CALCULUS has been written with the same attention to detail, eye for innovation, and meticulous accuracy that have made Stewart's textbooks the best-selling calculus texts in the world.

This book is for instructors who think that most calculus textbooks are too long. In writing the book, James Stewart asked himself: What is essential for a three-semester calculus course for scientists and engineers? SINGLE VARIABLE ESSENTIAL CALCULUS, Second Edition, offers a concise approach to teaching calculus that focuses on major concepts, and supports those concepts with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. The book is only 550 pages--two-fifths the size of Stewart's other calculus texts (CALCULUS, Seventh Edition and CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Seventh Edition) and yet it contains almost all of the same topics. The author achieved this relative brevity primarily by condensing the exposition and by putting some of the features on the book's website, www.StewartCalculus.com. Despite the more compact size, the book has a modern flavor, covering technology and incorporating material to promote conceptual understanding, though not as prominently as in Stewart's other books. SINGLE VARIABLE ESSENTIAL CALCULUS features the same attention to detail, eye for innovation, and meticulous accuracy that have made Stewart's textbooks the best-selling calculus texts in the world.

Calculus hasn’t changed, but your students have. Many of today’s students have seen calculus before at the high school level.  However, professors report nationwide that students come into their calculus courses with weak backgrounds in algebra and trigonometry, two areas of knowledge vital to the mastery of calculus. University Calculus: Alternate Edition responds to the needs of today’s students by developing their conceptual understanding while maintaining a rigor appropriate to the calculus course. The Alternate Edition is the perfect alternative for instructors who want the same quality and quantity of exercises as Thomas’ Calculus, Media Upgrade, Eleventh Edition but prefer a faster-paced presentation.CourseSmart textbooks do not include any media or print supplements that come packaged with the bound book.

For many students, calculus can be the most mystifying and frustrating course they will ever take. The Calculus Lifesaver provides students with the essential tools they need not only to learn calculus, but to excel at it. All of the material in this user-friendly study guide has been proven to get results. The book arose from Adrian Banner's popular calculus review course at Princeton University, which he developed especially for students who are motivated to earn A's but get only average grades on exams. The complete course will be available for free on the Web in a series of videotaped lectures. This study guide works as a supplement to any single-variable calculus course or textbook. Coupled with a selection of exercises, the book can also be used as a textbook in its own right. The style is informal, non-intimidating, and even entertaining, without sacrificing comprehensiveness. The author elaborates standard course material with scores of detailed examples that treat the reader to an "inner monologue"--the train of thought students should be following in order to solve the problem--providing the necessary reasoning as well as the solution. The book's emphasis is on building problem-solving skills. Examples range from easy to difficult and illustrate the in-depth presentation of theory. The Calculus Lifesaver combines ease of use and readability with the depth of content and mathematical rigor of the best calculus textbooks. Using the same warm, conversational style she employs in the classroom, Martha presents the material in an understandable way, but without sacrificing the mathematics. A full-color presentation and contemporary applications, such as Starbuck’s franchise growth and the Orlando Magic attendance, keep students engaged.Far more than a roadmap to solving exercises, this is a book that motivates students to think.CourseSmart textbooks do not include any media or print supplements that come packaged with the bound book.

The wide-ranging debate brought about by the calculus reform movement has had a significant impact on calculus textbooks. In response to many of the questions and concerns surrounding this debate, the authors have written a modern calculus textbook, intended for students majoring in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and related fields. The text is written for the average student -- one who does not already know the subject, whose background is somewhat weak in spots, and who requires a significant motivation to study calculus. The authors follow a relatively standard order of presentation, while integrating technology and thought-provoking exercises throughout the text. Some minor changes have been made in the order of topics to reflect shifts in the importance of certain applications in engineering and science. This text also gives an early introduction to logarithms, exponentials and the trigonometric functions. Wherever practical, concepts are developed from graphical, numerical, and algebraic perspectives (the Rule of Three) to give students a full understanding of calculus. This text places a significant emphasis on problem solving and presents realistic applications, as well as open-ended problems.

The only tutor struggling calculus students will ever need!-- More students are now required to take calculus in college than ever before; yet many find their textbooks and teachers to be incomprehensible.-- This book differs from the majority of calculus books in that it is not aimed at the advanced placement audience. Rather, it is aimed at those who actually need to learn calculus in order to pass the class they are in or are about to take.According to figures released by ACT Inc., many more U.S. high school students are taking courses in mathematics than was the case a decade ago. In fact, the portion of college-bound students taking calculus increased from 16 percent in 1987 to 27 percent in 2000. Let's face it, most students and adults who take calculus do so not for the fun of it, but rather to advance within a job or fulfill a degree requirement. The Complete Idiot's Guide RM to Calculus will take the sting out of this complex math by putting it's uses, functions and limitations in perspective of what is already familiar to readers-algebra. Once readers have brushed up on their algebra and trigonometry skills, they'll be eased into the fundamentals of calculus.

When first published posthumously in 1963, this book presented a radically different approach to the teaching of calculus.  In sharp contrast to the methods of his time, Otto Toeplitz did not teach calculus as a static system of techniques and facts to be memorized. Instead, he drew on his knowledge of the history of mathematics and presented calculus as an organic evolution of ideas beginning with the discoveries of Greek scholars, such as Archimedes, Pythagoras, and Euclid, and developing through the centuries in the work of Kepler, Galileo, Fermat, Newton, and Leibniz. Through this unique approach, Toeplitz summarized and elucidated the major mathematical advances that contributed to modern calculus. Reissued for the first time since 1981 and updated with a new foreword, this classic text in the field of mathematics is experiencing a resurgence of interest among students and educators of calculus today.

A challenging exposition of calculus in the European style, it is an excellent text for a first-year university honors course or for a third-year analysis course. The calculus is built carefully from the axioms with all the standard results deduced from these axioms. The concise construction, by design, provides maximal flexibility for the instructor and allows the student to see the overall flow of the development. At the same time, the book reveals the origins of the calculus in celestial mechanics and number theory. The book introduces many topics often left to the appendixes in standard calculus textbooks and develops their connections with physics, engineering, and statistics. The author uses applications of derivatives and integrals to show how calculus is applied in these disciplines. Solutions to all exercises (even those involving proofs) are available to instructors upon request, making this book unique among texts in the field. Focuses on single variable calculus Provides a balance of precision and intuition Offers both routine and demanding exercises

Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement.

Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks

Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes.

Essential Calculus, Enhanced Edition (with Enhanced WebAssign with eBook Printed Access Card for Multi Term Math and Science) by Stewart, James Edition , 1 Essential Calculus, Enhanced Edition (with Enhanced WebAssign with eBook Printed Access Card for Multi Term Math and Science) by Stewart, James Edition , 1
$44.49

The Enhanced Edition of Stewart's Essential Calculus is accompanied by an Enhanced WebAssign course, featuring thousands of additional algorithmic problems, stepped out solutions, and new learning tools for students. The Enhanced Edition also offers an online version of the textbook in the form of an eBook, giving students the opportunity to access their textbook from anywhere. Students have access to the Quick Start Guide for Enhanced WebAssign, which allows seamless transition from the original text to the enhanced book.

History Textbooks and the Wars in Asia History Textbooks and the Wars in Asia
$148

Over the past fifteen years Northeast Asia has witnessed growing intraregional exchanges and interactions, especially in the realms of culture and economy. Still, the region cannot escape from the burden of history. This book examines the formation of historical memory in four Northeast Asian societies (China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) and the United States focusing on the period from the beginning of the Sino-Japanese war in 1931 until the formal conclusion of the Pacific War with the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951. The contributors analyse the recent efforts of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese scholars to write a common history' of Northeast Asia and question the underlying motivations for their efforts and subsequent achievements. In doing so, they contend that the greatest obstacle to reconciliation in Northeast Asia lies in the existence of divided, and often conflicting, historical memories. The book argues that a more fruitful approach lies in understanding how historical memory has evolved in each country and been incorporated into respective master narratives. Through uncovering the existence of different master narratives, it is hoped, citizens will develop a more self-critical, self-reflective approach to their own history and that such an introspective effort has the potential to lay the foundation for greater self- and mutual understanding and eventual historical reconciliation in the region. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Asian history, Asian education and international relations in East Asia.

Designing History in East Asian Textbooks Designing History in East Asian Textbooks
$148

This book analyses the efforts throughout East Asia to deploy education for purposes of political socialization, and in particular in order to shape notions of identity. The chapters also examine the trend of common textbook initiatives', which have recently emerged in East Asia with the aim of helping to defuse tensions arguably fuelled by existing practices of mutual (mis)representation. These are analysed in relation to the East Asian political context, and compared with previous and ongoing endeavours in other parts of the world, particularly Europe, which have been keenly observed by East Asian practitioners. Written by a group of international education experts, chapters discuss the enduring focus on the role of curricula in inculcating homogenous visions of the national self, and indeed homogenized visions of significant 'others'. Including contributions from scholars and curriculum developers involved personally in the writing of national and multi-national history textbooks this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian education, Asian history and comparative education studies. ?
