Ethics for the Legal Professional, Sixth Edition
$44.99 Course: Ethics courses taught in Legal Studies, Paralegal Studies, and Legal Assistant programs.Ethics for the Legal Professional sets the standard for professional responsibility textbooks. Now in its sixth edition, the text has been reorganized to reflect the changes in the paralegal profession. It begins with concrete concepts that have been given some clear direction in the courts and state legislatures (UPL confidentiality and conflicts) before moving on to the more technical, rule-driven concepts (advertising, billing and fees), and then to the most abstract rules (competence, zealous representation and integrity). Written from the viewpoint of the paralegal, this book uses plain English and an upbeat tone to keep readers engaged. It then reinforces each chapter’s learning objectives with improved end-of-chapter materials such as multiple choice, fill in the blank and true/false questions. Unique to the 6th Edition, is end of chapter materials for classroom collaborative learning activities, hypotheticals for classroom discussion, and cases for consideration, each with their own set of questions. Still the most popular book in its genre, the 6th Edition continues to tackle the most important ethical issues facing paralegals today in a frank, conversational style. New to this edition are 24 scenario-based videos that deal with the most common ethical situations paralegals will encounter on the job. |

Technical Communication Strategies for Today, First Edition
$30.99 Technical Communication Today, Brief Editionoffers students all of the topics and genres they need for their technical communication course–in fewer pages and at a significantly lower price.Students want their textbooks to cost less, and they want comprehensive topical coverage presented in a succinct and clear writing style. Technical Communication Today, Brief Edition offers both and speaks to today's students. Instructional narrative is “chunked,” so that portions of text are combined with graphics. The chunked presentation also integrates an awareness of how documents are read–often “raided” by readers seeking the information they need, and it models the way today’s technical documents should be designed. The contemporary writing style is matched by an approach that accurately reflects the modern day computer-centered technical workplace: Technical Communication Today, Brief Edition presents computers as thinking tools that powerfully influence how we develop, produce, design, and deliver technical documents and presentations. |

The Key to Technical Translation
$158 This handbook for German/English/German technical translators at all levels from student to professional covers the root terminologies of the spectrum of scientific and engineering fields. The work is designed to give technical translators direct insight into the main error sources occurring in their profession, especially those resulting from a poor understanding of the subject matter and the usage of particular terms to designate different concepts in different branches of technology. The style is easy to read and suitable for nonnative English speakers and translators with no engineering experience. Volume 1 presents a comprehensive systematic description of the basic concepts underlying all branches of technology: Electrical, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Materials, Science, Electronics, Nucleonics, Aeronautics, Computers, Automobiles, Plastics and other important fields. Volume 2 expands this terminology with the aid of a Technical Thesaurus and a set of structured bilingual dictionaries which draw attention to specific English/German errors, usage of technical vocabulary and to collocations of general vocabulary in engineering contexts. The two volumes combine 3 major areas: 1. Technical Translation, 2. General Linguistics and 3. Computational Lexicography, possibly indirectly marking the birth of a new discipline “Technical Linguistics”. The book is designed for practical as well as academic use, for translator trainers, practicing translators, applied linguists, and professional engineers and scientists working with English/German documentation. “There is so much material there that the books will not only be wanted by English/German/English translators, but the English basis on its own will be attractive to other language orientations involving English” Juan C. Sager (UMIST, Manchester) |

Beyond Textbooks
$32 Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement. |

Innovative Approaches to Teaching Technical Communication
$18 Programs in technical writing, technical communication, and/or professional communication have recently grown in enrollment as the demand among employers for formally prepared technical writers and editors has grown. In response, scholarly treatments of the subject and the teaching of technical writing are also burgeoning, and the body of research and theory being published in this field is many times larger and more accessible than it was even a decade ago. Although many theoretical and disciplinary perspectives can potentially inform technical communication teaching, administration, and curriculum development, the actual influences on the field's canonical texts have traditionally come from a rather limited range of disciplines. Innovative Approaches to Teaching Technical Communication brings together a wide range of scholars/teachers to expand the existing canon. |

Governance of Technical Education in India
$9.99 Higher education, and in particular technical education, is critical to India’s aspirations of becoming a major competitive player in the global knowledge economy. The technical education system is huge and complex, and reforms are imperative. Countrywide policies continue to identify Good Governance as key to the success of reforms and investments in higher education. A Learning Forum brought together senior policymakers, leaders and experts from: five States leading in technical education (Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal); Ministry of Human Resource Development, Industry, TEQIP National Project Implementation Unit, and the World Bank. The Forum agreed to nine key governance issues that are central to Good Governance: (i) a new model of an autonomous institution; (ii) Common legal framework for governance; (iii) Strategic planning; (iv) Common quality assurance; (v) Policies for industry/academic collaboration; (vi) Professional development for faculty, leaders and Boards of Governors; (vii) Optimum utilization of resources (xiii) Mentoring institutions gaining autonomous status, and (ix) Policy to tackle faculty shortage. Chapter 1 discusses how this Good Governance agenda depends upon coordinated actions at the faculty, institutional, state, and central level; including a clear list of how each stakeholder can take action. Chapter 2 of this report contains Generic papers on the principles, challenges and common language of governance. The chapter reflects upon the issues and attitudes of state legislators and, at the other extreme, principles for governance of an autonomous institution. Chapter 3 consists of five State case studies that frankly and succinctly describe the dramatic challenges that the State governments face to ensure quality, access, inclusiveness, and relevance in technical education. The case studies documents that these states have strong and positives results from the last decade of experiments with governance reforms such as, academic and financial autonomy, block grant funding, faculty assessments, independent quality audits, and devolution of powers to Institutional Board of Governors. Chapter 4 offers a comparable, succinct and honest overview of challenges and recent reforms within governance of higher education from India, China, Europe, Japan, South Korea, U.K., and the U.S. These case studies discuss global failures and successes from balancing demands for greater institutional autonomy with the government’s need to direct strategic economic development and enhance participation in higher education. |

Nature of Science in General Chemistry Textbooks
$49.95 Research in science education has recognized the importance of history and philosophy of science (HPS). Nature of science (NOS) is considered to be an essential part of HPS with important implications for teaching science. The role played by textbooks in developing students' informed conceptions of NOS has been a source of considerable interest for science educators. In some parts of the world, textbooks become the curriculum and determine to a great extent what is taught and learned in the classroom. Given this background and interest, this monograph has evaluated NOS in university level general chemistry textbooks published in U.S.A. Most textbooks in this study provided little insight with respect to the nine criteria used for evaluating NOS. Some of the textbooks, however, inevitably refer to HPS and thus provide guidelines for future textbooks. A few of the textbooks go into considerable detail to present the atomic models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and wave mechanical to illustrate the tentative nature of scientific theories - an important NOS aspect. These results lead to the question: Are we teaching science as practiced by scientists? An answer to this question can help us to understand the importance of NOS, by providing students an HPS-based environment, so that they too (just like the scientists) feel the thrill and excitement of discovering new things. This monograph provides students and teachers guidelines for introducing various aspects of NOS, based on historical episodes. |

Theory of Constraints in Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (Chapter 29 of Theory of Constraints Handbook)
$6.95 This is an individual chapter of Theory of Constraints Handbook. Theory of Constraints is a highly regarded management innovation that runs contrary to conventional wisdom. TOC is best known in the Manufacturing and Distribution sectors where it originated, but services are the dominant sectors in most economies nowadays. The Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (PSTS) sector is notable because many of its services are not repeatable, thereby making TOC much harder to apply. Nevertheless, it can be done. This chapter summarizes how and why TOC has been adapted for PSTS. It includes applications for management of resources, projects, business processes, accounting, marketing, sales, strategy, and implementation. Among the benefits of TOC are faster services, greater flexibility, and a sensible re-shuffling of management priorities for profitable growth. Simply stated, TOC makes constraints work for you rather than against you. This chapter explains how practitioners can get started with TOC for services, what researchers can contribute, and what students should know. |

History Textbooks and the Wars in Asia
$148 Over the past fifteen years Northeast Asia has witnessed growing intraregional exchanges and interactions, especially in the realms of culture and economy. Still, the region cannot escape from the burden of history. This book examines the formation of historical memory in four Northeast Asian societies (China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) and the United States focusing on the period from the beginning of the Sino-Japanese war in 1931 until the formal conclusion of the Pacific War with the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951. The contributors analyse the recent efforts of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese scholars to write a common history' of Northeast Asia and question the underlying motivations for their efforts and subsequent achievements. In doing so, they contend that the greatest obstacle to reconciliation in Northeast Asia lies in the existence of divided, and often conflicting, historical memories. The book argues that a more fruitful approach lies in understanding how historical memory has evolved in each country and been incorporated into respective master narratives. Through uncovering the existence of different master narratives, it is hoped, citizens will develop a more self-critical, self-reflective approach to their own history and that such an introspective effort has the potential to lay the foundation for greater self- and mutual understanding and eventual historical reconciliation in the region. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Asian history, Asian education and international relations in East Asia. |

Designing History in East Asian Textbooks
$148 This book analyses the efforts throughout East Asia to deploy education for purposes of political socialization, and in particular in order to shape notions of identity. The chapters also examine the trend of common textbook initiatives', which have recently emerged in East Asia with the aim of helping to defuse tensions arguably fuelled by existing practices of mutual (mis)representation. These are analysed in relation to the East Asian political context, and compared with previous and ongoing endeavours in other parts of the world, particularly Europe, which have been keenly observed by East Asian practitioners. Written by a group of international education experts, chapters discuss the enduring focus on the role of curricula in inculcating homogenous visions of the national self, and indeed homogenized visions of significant 'others'. Including contributions from scholars and curriculum developers involved personally in the writing of national and multi-national history textbooks this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian education, Asian history and comparative education studies. ? Gotelind Mller is Professor of Chinese Studies, University of Heidelberg, Germany |
